Drainage and Construction Services

Highway flooding, investigation and solution

The highway drainage in this area was unable to cope with extreme rainfall events although there should be ample storm water capacity in the River Tame culvert, which runs through the area. Our remit was to investigate the gullies, their connections and outfall to the River or sewer.

Property flooding, survey, investigation, and solution

YTS were commissioned to investigate the cause of flooding to properties adjacent to a road junction that had been modified to incorporate a traffic calming speed table. During the construction of the table the highway drainage had been modified. However there was also evidence that the public sewers had surcharged so it was unclear what the actual cause of the problem was.

CASE STUDIES

A further selection of case studies are provided below. Please click on the link to read about each project in more detail (pdf).

Domestic drainage investigation

The domestic drainage industry is overrun with "just claim on your house insurance" type contractors, they may have little or no drainage qualifications but have enough knowledge to convince the householder that major work needs doing and that their quotation is reasonable.  A group of house owners were faced with a quotation of several thousand pounds to cut roots out of the last length of a shared private foul drain, the contractor said the drain should then be relined to prevent the roots growing back.  YTS were asked to provide a second opinion.

Domestic septic tank assessment and report

A.T.Webb & Son Ltd carried out the total refurbishment of an abandoned and derelict gatekeepers cottage. The objective was to refurbish original features wherever possible and if part of the building was beyond repair they would carefully reconstruct that aspect in the original materials to fully compliment the building. One aspect of the project that the Local Authority wanted investigating was the original Victorian brick built septic tank.  I was asked to survey, investigate, assess and report on the suitability of the system.

Access road flooding, investigation, design and deliver solution

This access road to a NHS Trust Clinic suffered flooding due to water coming up out of the road gullies. We discovered this was due to the original collapsed connection to a railway drain being replaced by a soakaway. After a few years  this had become inundated, water from higher ground could only find its way up and out of these gullies. New building work meant it was no longer possible to repair the old pipe. The flooding was dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians getting to and from the clinic, particularly in the winter.
